GUARDIANSHIP
If you are the parent of a disabled child about to turn 18 years old or are responsible for an adult who cannot make decisions or care for themselves due to a severe illness, disability, or dementia, you may need to ask the courts to give you guardianship of that individual. A guardian is a court-appointed person who is responsible for making some or all decisions for their “ward.” With the court’s approval, the guardian may be authorized to make decisions regarding the health, medical care, finances, and/or living arrangements for their loved one.
